How do I know if static stimulation is right
for me and my dog?

Static stimulation is a type of aversive - that is, something that is unpleasant that can help shape behavior. Other types of aversives are spray, sound, and anything that is unpleasant (if it is pleasant, it is not an aversive). Aversives are used to shape behavior by delivering a punishment for an unwanted behavior. The use of aversives and punishment is an effective method of shaping behavior but there are others that you may consider trying. The decision to use aversive and punishment should be based on personal preferences, temperament of the dog, desired outcome, and effectiveness of other methods tried.

What makes today's electronic training devices more humane than their predecessors?

Early static stimulation products were "one size fits all" in that they only delivered one level of stimulation and it was very high. Due to advances in technology, today's products have multiple levels of stimulation that can be adjusted for the temperament of each dog. When using static stimulation, it is best to use the lowest level necessary to be effective for your specific dog and his temperament and the behavior you are working on.

Also, with the advances in technology, the products have become more sophisticated. As an example, the bark control collars have improved significantly. Originally, bark control collars detected a dog's bark with the use of a microphone. The disadvantage to this was that any loud noise triggered the device causing a large number of false stimulation. The next step was to develop a vibration sensor that only activated with the vibration caused in the throat by a bark. This reduced the false stimulation significantly but a false stimulation could still occur when the collar banged against a food bowl or the dog scratched his neck. The final step came with the introduction of a dual sensing collar that has both a microphone and a vibration sensor and a processor that only triggers the collar if there is both a sound and vibration eliminating false stimulation.

With better technology, remote trainers have improved as well. With advancements in antennas, batteries, and electronic components, remote trainers have become more and more sophisticated with longer ranges, more levels of stimulation that are easily changed, and smaller receiver collars and transmitters.

Through technological advances, today's electronic training devices are easier to use and more effective for your dog.

How can electronic training devices be used to help solve some behavior problems?
There are many methods that can be used to alter the behavior of your dog and many people, professional behaviorists to regular pet owners, have opinions of what is best for pets. Below is a list of a few pet issues that electronic training devices have been shown to be effective and how they are used. There are many other methods that can be used to solve these issues, as a pet owner, you will need to choose what is best for you and your pet. Barking
Barking is a very important part of a dog's life. It is when this barking becomes a nuisance that pet owners need to step in and seek a way to control it. There are many ways to reduce a dog's nuisance barking from environment enrichment to adequate exercise. However, when these methods are not effective, a tool that can be used is an anti-barking device. There are many different types of products from wall mounted to hand held, to collars worn by the dog. The aversives that are used are sound (sonic, that you and I can hear, and ultrasonic, sound that only a dog can hear), spray (air, lemon, and citronella), static or electronic stimulation.

The idea behind a bark control collar is to automatically and consistently deliver an aversive when the dog barks to teach the dog not to bark, thus avoiding the aversive or punishment. As such, you need to pick a collar that will deliver the aversive consistently and the aversive has to be one that will be effective for your dog. Some aversives are more effective than others depending on the dog and how often the dog has been exposed to it causing them to habituate or become used to the aversion.

No matter which product is selected, a bark control collar is only intended for nuisance barking and should be removed from the dog when barking is permitted. If you think your dog's barking is caused by something like anxiety, phobias, or aggression, seek the advise of your veterinarian or a professional trainer or behaviorist.

Containment
One of the oldest uses for electronic training devices is to keep a pet in their yard. The devices for containment are either in-ground wired or wireless. The in-ground wired fences consist of a wire placed along the perimeter that carries a signal produced by a wall-mounted transmitter, the dog wears a receiver collar that picks up a warning tone and then a stimulation signal when the collar reaches the perimeter. The wireless system is similar except that there is no wire to bury making it easier to install and portable. The wireless systems are not as adaptable to shapes and sizes and can only transmit in a circle but are a great option for those who can live with the limitations.

The most important thing to remember with any containment system is that it is a psychological barrier, not a physical one. The training you give your dog on the system (one manufacturer recommends a minimum of two weeks of training) is the most important part of the set up. The system only acts as a reminder of the training your dog received.

Remote Training
Remote training devices generally consist of a hand-held remote transmitter and a receiver collar worn by your pet. These are used in conjunction with a training protocol and can help with all types of training. Today's devices have many features to choose from including range (from 100 yards to over 2 miles), waterproofness, size, number of levels of stimulation, and types of stimulation.
